How to Become More Mature
If you’ve ever been told you’re “immature,” or that you need to “grow-up,” you know the burn can stick with you for a long time.
In order to become more mature, to be someone who handles their emotions with grace and behaves like an adult when others are acting childish, you need the right mindset.
This article explores some of the key characteristics of mature people, the benefits of this trait, and important steps you can take to be more mature.
What causes lack of maturity?
Before we dive into exactly how to be mature, it’s important to explore where a lack of maturity stems from in the first place.
If you don’t think you’re as mature as you could be, you likely haven’t experienced a life situation that has forced you to grow up quickly, or to have a mature mindset. And that’s ok!
Not all of us mature at the same rate.
The good news is, by being aware of your immediate emotional reactions, your capacity to express empathy, and your thoughts, you can make up for lost time.
No matter where you’re starting, we should all strive to work on ourselves and become better people. Improving your mental and physical wellness prepares you to assess and survive any life situation that arises.
Therefore, while you may have never experienced situations to add to your maturity tool belt, you can still start increasing your maturity today!
In this state, you no longer give into impulses, think in a narrow minded fashion, and neglect responsibilities.
But always remember, there is no definitive degree of maturity that remains constant: we’re all a work in progress.
How do I increase my maturity?
There are so many benefits to the trait of maturity:
- Better functioning, stronger relationships
- Fewer arguments with loved ones
- Enhanced brain function
- Boosted self-confidence
- More life stability
- General satisfaction with the world around you
So, let’s talk all about how to be matured tips:
1. Keep your commitments
The first step in how to be more mature is following through on what you say you’re going to do.
Mature people tend to stick to what they’re committed to: whether that’s a relationship, a friendship, or a task at work.
They do not embody the words erratic, flaky, or untrustworthy. They’re dependable, hard working individuals who keep their word!
2. Develop control over your emotions
Another key hallmark of mature people is that they know their emotions better than anyone else.
They are aware of their emotional responses and have the ability to think through decisions logically.
By investing in themselves and exploring coping mechanisms to break down negative thought cycles, these people do not let others get under their skin.
Most of all, they monitor their words and actions instead of being controlled by them.
In order to do this, take time to pause and reflect on what your emotions are screaming at you to do. Then, be sure to take action that aligns with who you are at the root–not with the emotions you feel in the moment.

3. Approach situations objectively
The next tactic in how to develop your emotional maturity is to be objective when dealing with difficult situations. Trust me, this is much easier said than done.
However, one of the best tips I have is to focus on your body as you engage in a tough conversation or a hard assignment at work.
Instead of harping on how the other person cannot understand you, or how unfair the project feels, make sure you take care of yourself.
Remember that everyone comes from a different background, and that it is not your job to fix others.
Detach and let what will be, be.
4. Be empathetic
As you’re probably noticing, what makes a person mature has a lot to do with how they handle adversity and situations beyond their control.
Being empathetic is one of these hallmark components to maturity. Highly mature people know how to put themselves in other people’s shoes.
They can feel deeply and possess an innate awareness for how their decisions impact other people emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually.
5. Remain humble
“A great man is always willing to be little.”
– Ralph Waldo Emerson
Possessing a humble attitude means you operate outside of your ego. You are not boasting about yourself 24/7, sharing every accomplishment online for the world to congratulate you.
Instead, you are willing to learn, to make mistakes, to be wrong. You acknowledge the limits of your knowledge while simultaneously striving to educate yourself further.
At the end of the day, knowing how to become more mature in life starts with admitting your faults and being willing to feel small sometimes.
6. Stay focused on your goals
Additionally, for you to become more mature, stay driven with your ambitions. Be deliberate about what you want to accomplish, and then stay the course!
Don’t allow fear of the unknown or imposter syndrome to rock your boat.
- Create a list of your top goals for the next year, and break them out into smaller, accomplishable tasks
7. Be self-aware
Another one of the best ways to be mature is to be self-aware.
Self-awareness is all about having an understanding of your thoughts, feelings, values, beliefs, and actions. It means that you understand who you are, what you want, how you feel, and why you do the things that you do.
Why is this so important? Because, when you can call out your faults or catch yourself repeating cycles you’ve already outgrown, you’re gradually morphing into a more authentic version of yourself.
8. Love yourself first
In addition, if you really want to know how to be mature faster, you may want to start loving yourself!
Mature people can define their identity–they’re building it daily–and they are their own biggest advocates.
They take care of themselves, are in tune with their bodies, and are highly protective of their energy.
Finally, they face their difficulties head-on. They do not sit around hoping challenges will fix themselves, or that someone will swoop in to save them.
Because they have so much love for themselves, they are willing to resolve issues and address problems no matter what it takes.
9. Respect other people’s opinions
Another one of the most important ways to become more emotionally mature is to respect other people and their perspectives on life.
No matter how much you may wish to get everyone aligned with your views, please accept that this is not possible. You will never change other people who do not want to change themselves.
Even if you don’t agree with someone’s opinion, listening to them shows that you are open minded.
Lastly, do not allow others to make you angry easily: remain unloved by people’s remarks and remember who you are!
10. Stick to a consistent routine
Maintaining a stable, healthy routine that factors in your wellness goals is another step towards being a mature person.
A consistent routine should include your work and school responsibilities, physical activities, family, diet, time for yourself, and hobbies.
11. Let go of what no longer serves you
Next up on this list of how to be a mature person is letting go of what no longer is meant for you!
Mature people are decisive and know when it’s time to move forward in life. They dissociate from friends, habits, relationships, commitments, and thoughts that do not bring them peace.
- You can start doing this today by re-evaluating where you spend the most energy.
12. Spread gratitude
Also, mature people are super appreciative and thankful for what they have.
They recognize the little things that bring them joy throughout the day, whether that be a stranger smiling at them, a beautiful sunrise, or their first cup of coffee brewing.
Finally, consider taking things a step further by sharing your gratitude with others… your energy is radiant!
Here are some wellness supplies to build upon this maturity habit:
13. Own your mistakes
The final, but one of the most important, ways to become more mature is by taking ownership of your mistakes.
Mature individuals know how to own their shortcomings without shame or fear of rejection.
They can be vulnerable with themselves and others–and now how to leverage their mistakes to build a brighter reality!
Most importantly, by not blaming others and correcting their faults, they are becoming a true role model to those who look up to them.
